I visited the beautiful island of Madeira some 10 years ago while on a walking holiday. The figures in the painting were my fellow hikers. I painted this from a photo I took of this mountainside village that we passed by. It was a hazy day with mild temperatures even at this altitude. This view appeared so perfect and just begging to be painted. The result is quite abstract as I didn't want to get into too many details but rather capture the feel of the place on that day.
