Watercolour painting of a pretty stairway surrounded by pink bougainvillea in Turkey. I first visited the south coast of Turkey in 2009 on a painting holiday with another artist. This stairway was a short walk from out hotel that I passed daily. I took many photos and painted this final piece in a loose, expressionistic style. The pink bougainvillea flowers are typical of this region as well as the white-washed stone work. I particularly liked the subtle colours of the shadows on the white staircase in similar hue as the flowers themselves. Although pink is a cold colour, the painting appears quite warm as is this region of the world. I achieved this by adding a very diluted wash of burnt sienna which is a warm colour.
